Abstract

1,184,831. Polymerisation catalysts. COLUMBIAN CARBON CO. 6 Feb., 1967 [7 Feb., 1966], No. 5635/67. Heading B1E. [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] A polymerization catalyst component is made by (a) mixing a chromium compound component with an activating component comprising one or more compounds of the empirical formula R a MX b , wherein the ratio of the number of R groups to the number of M atoms in the activating compound is at least 1:10, R is selected from hydrogen and organic radicals, M is an element selected from metals of groups IA, IIA, IIB, IIIA IV(A) and boron, X is a halogen radical, a and b are O or integers from 1 to 4 and the sum of a and b is equal to the valency of M, or the precursors of the activating component, and the mixed components contain halogen and chromium in the atomic ratio of from 2:1 to 5:1, and (b) separating the insoluble interaction product from the mixture with an inert organic solvent. In (a) the word component includes mixtures of compounds. The specification contains extensive lists of chromium and activating components. Exemplified chromium components are chromous acetate and chloride, chromic benzoate and acetylacetonate, chromyl chloride, hydroxyacetate, and benzoylacetonate, and bis(cumene) chromium (0). Exemplified activating components are (C 2 H 5 )AlCl, (C 4 H 9 ) 2 AlF, C 2 H 5 AlCl 2 , (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlH mixed with AlCl 3 , (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlH mixed with C 2 H 5 AlCl 2 (C 2 H 5 ) 3 Al mixed with AlCl 3 and (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlH mixed with C 3 H 5 Br. Two examples are given employing precursors i.e. example I, using aluminium chloride, powdered aluminium, chromic chloride, and isobutylene, and example II using aluminium chloride, powdered aluminium, chromium III oxide, and ethyl chloride. The catalyst component may be mixed with a metal or compound selected from metals of groups IA, IIA, IIB, IIIA, IVA and hydrides, and organometallic compounds of these metals and boron and used to form oligomers, for example cyclododecatriene from butadiene.
