Abstract

1,184,782. Packaging material in tubed webs. F. T. ROWELL. 23 March, 1967 [23 Dec., 1965], No. 54535/65. Heading B8C. In a bag making and filling machine of the type wherein a tube, formed from a web, is pulled through the machine by jaws which effect a transverse seal, the reel, from which the web is fed, is itself driven to obviate the effects of inertia. In the form shown, a web feed reel 2 is driven by a rubber covered roller 7 which bears upon its periphery. The shaft 6, Fig. 2, which carries the roller 7, is driven via chains 4, running on sprockets 8, from reciprocating jaw carriage 3. When the jaws begin their downwards stroke to seal and feed the web, magnetic clutches 9 engage to transmit drive to roller 7. When the jaws reach their lowest position the clutches disengage and the wheel is braked pneumatically. If the wheel overruns an arm (not shown), sensing the lack of tension, actuates means for rotating the reel to take up slack.
