Abstract

[Also. in Division Fl] A fuel pump diaphragm comprises at least one layer of fabric eg a polyamide fabric, carrying on each face a coating of elastic material, both coatings being swellable in the presence of engine fuel and the second coating before more swellable e.g. 1.5 times more swellable than the first to an extent such as to provide a substantial reduction of the tendency for the second coating to dry out by evaporation when the diaphragm is used in a fuel pump with the first coating in contact with engine fuel. The second coating may have a smaller diffusion resistance for engine fuel than the first coating. The second coating may be formed of the same material as the first coating but contains an additive adapted to give it the required difference of properties. The first coating may be formed of a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile and the second coating of the copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile and a copolymer of butadiene and styrene; or the first coating may be based on polychloroprene and the second on a blend of polychloroprene and natural caoutchouc. The two coatings may be differently coloured. The diaphragm may be used under conditions in which the amount of swelling of the second coating is substantially equal to the amount of swelling of the first coating.
