Abstract

1,184,360. Redox polymerization catalyst. CELANESE CORP. 14 Nov., 1967, No. 51705/67. Heading C3P. A redox catalyst system wherein an arylphosphinic acid or a water-soluble salt thereof is used as the reducing agent is employed in particular for the emulsion polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, e.g. vinyl acetate or an alkyl acrylate and/or methacrylate. Polymers produced from monomers containing cross-linking groups may be crosslinked by heating, without any additional catalyst. Specified aryl phosphinic compounds are benzene-, p-toluene-, xylene-, alphanaphthalene-, beta-naphthalene- and diphenylphosphinic acids and their lithium, sodium, potassium and ammonium salts. A conventional peroxy compound is used as oxidant. In Examples I, VI and VII an aqueous preemulsion containing methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, an alkylaryl polyether alcohol, nonylphenoxy poly-(ethyleneoxy) ethanol, benzene phosphinio acid and a solution of sodium persulphate are added over a period of time to a mixture containing all the aforesaid reactants, further amounts of the emulsifiers being added subsequently. The procedure of these examples is followed in Examples II to V, except that the reducing agent is toluenephosphinic acid, xylenephosphinic acid, or the sodium or potassium salt of benzenephosphinic acid, and in Examples VIII and IX, except that the oxidant used is potassium or ammonium persulphate. In Examples X and XI the pre-emulsion also contains N-methylol acrylamide, but the reducing agent is omitted and is added as a separate solution, which also contains sodium bicarbonate, some additional bicarbonate being present in the initial reaction mixture. .
