Abstract

1,184,139. Polyesterimide resins. DR. BECK & CO. A.G. 28 Oct., 1968 [11 Nov., 1967], No. 51007/68. Heading C3R. Water soluble polyesterimide resins are prepared by initially condensing at least one aromatic tricarboxylic acid anhydride, e.g. trimellitic anhydride, with at least one primary diamine, in an amount of up to 80% of that required for cyclic imide formation, and with an excess of at least one dihydric and/or polyhydric alcohol. Excess alcohol is subsequently distilled off and the condensate formed is heated with a small amount of aqueous ammonia (optionally with additional glycol) at > 80‹ C., e.g. for to 2 hours. The diamine is preferably aromatic and the polyol may be ethylene glycol, glycerol or a mixture of the two. The aqueous solutions are useful as varnishes, they may be cyclized by heating, e.g. for one hour at 200‹ C. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 973,377.
