Abstract

1,184,086. Fuel elements. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 29 Jan., 1968 [15 March, 1967], No. 12166/67. Heading G6C. A fuel element 24 providing an irradiation facility in a materials testing reactor (Figs. 1, 2, not shown) cooled and moderated by heavy water, comprises a tube 26 for receiving experimental samples surrounded by curved longitudinally-extending fins such as 30, 31 supported by inner and outer rings 51, 52. The passages such as 33a, 34a, 35a permit the coolant to flow both longitudinally and circumferentially with respect to the tube 26. Each of the nine fins such as 30, 31 subtends an angle at the centre of tube 26 of 60 degrees and each fin is constituted by a fuel plate of enriched uranium clad in aluminium.
