Abstract

1,183,996. Borate glass composition. JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN., JENA, VEB. 28 July, 1967, No. 34728/67. Heading C1M. An optical borate glass composition for producing a glass having nd 1À76-1À90 and vd 34-49 consists essentially of, in percentages by weight; B2O3 17-35; Gd2O3 2-55; La2O3 0-50 and Ta2O5 0-50. Optional additives are Y2O3 0-18; Nb2O5 0-10; ZrO2 0-12; WO3 0-12; TiO2 0-10; CdF2 0-5 and ZnF2 0-5. Conventional refining means may be present. The composition may be melted electrically at 1150-1400‹ C. in Pt crucibles; refining takes place 50‹ C. above melting; casting temperature is ca. 1000‹ C: and initial annealing at ca. 650‹ C.
