Abstract
1,183,951. Surgical dressings. PARACHEM CORP. 1 May, 1967, No. 20128/67. Heading A5R. [Also in Divisions B2 and B5] A dressing for a wound comprises a layer of plasma-soluble haemostatic material supported on an aerated sponge-like sheet of elastomeric material. The haemostatic material, which may be aerated, may be in the form of a coating, for example a porous coating, and may be formulated with plasticizers, medicaments and humectants. The haemostatic material may comprise a water-soluble derivative of cellulose, for example hydroxyethyl cellulose or the sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose, having haemostatic and film-forming properties and having the property of combining with the plasma in a wound to form an artificial water-insoluble eschar (i.e. scab). The elastomeric material, which may be plasmainsoluble, may be polyurethane having either an open or a closed cell structure. The elastomeric material may be in the form of a preformed sheet to which the haemostatic material is applied in liquid form as a coating which subsequently is dried or a preformed sheet of polyurethane is laid on moist aerated haemostatic material which has been deposited as a layer on a non-adhering belt, the laminate structure thereafter being carried through a drying zone and the haemostatic material and polyurethane sheet being stripped from the belt.
