Abstract
1,183,356. Chemical contact apparatus; contacting gases with liquids. SIEMENS A.G. and VARTA A.G. 10 April, 1967 [16 April, 1966], No. 16373/67. Headings B1F and D1R. [Also in Division C2] A chemical or electrochemical reaction or mass transfer is effected between incompletely miscible phases of different wetting properties or between substances dissolved therein by contacting the phases in the pores of a porous reaction body possessing a system of pores of various sizes, the more readily wetting phase being introduced into the porous body at a pressure lower than the other phase whereby a part at least of the smaller pores of the body is filled with the more readily wetting phase and a part at least of the larger pores is filled with the other phase. The less wetting phase may be a gas and the other phase a liquid, or both phases may be liquid. In apparatus for effecting this process, one zone of the porous reaction is disposed between porous covering layers in which the pores are on average smaller in size than those of the porous reaction body, the remaining surface area between the covering layers being covered with an impermeable layer. For catalytic reactions, the porous reaction body may consist of catalyst, or the catalyst may be embedded in the body or in the walls of the pores. In Example 1, an H 2 /CO 2 mixture is scrubbed with 8-normal diethanolamine solution to remove CO 2 in the apparatus of Fig. 2. The diethanolamine solution circulates around the apparatus absorbing the CO 2 in porous reaction body 22 and releasing it to a stream of air in porous reaction body 12. H 2 /CO 2 mixture enters at 24 and the scrubbed mixture leaves at 26, while air enters at 8 and leaves together with entrained CO 2 at 14. Porous bodies 12 and 22 and layers 13 and 23 of finer porosity are of nickel. In example 2, the countercurrent extraction of bromine from aqueous solution with chloroform using the apparatus of Fig. 1 (not shown).
