Abstract

1,183,273. Assembling heat exchangers. LUMMUS CO. 1 Feb., 1968, No. 5284/68. Heading B3A. Apparatus for passing a load through a hole in a member comprises: support means 12, 14, 15; trolley means 16 mounted reciprocably within the support means; locking means on the trolley means for selectively locking the trolley to the support means; power means 18 mounted on the trolley means for imparting axial movement thereto; and connecting means 30 for imparting relative axial movement between the load and the power means. The load comprises a bundle 24 of heat exchanger tubes 26 which are to be passed through an aperture 23 in the wall 20 of a heat exchanger 11. The trolley has a pair of grooved wheels 35, which run on tracks 36, 37, mounted by pedestals 38, 39 on lower support beams 14, 15. A pair of guide wheels 41 contact upper support beam 12 to assist in guiding the trolley. The beams 12, 14, 15 are provided with keeper pins 48, 49, 50, which are engaged by locking bolts 56 reciprocably mounted on the trolley. In operation, the bundle 24 is advanced by a piston 60 working in an hydraulic cylinder 32 with the trolley locked to the support beams. When the piston 62 reaches the end of its stroke, fluid pressure motors 52 are actuated to withdraw the locking bolts 56. Pressure is then applied to the opposite face of the piston and the trolley is moved towards the heat exchanger since its inertia is less than that of the tube bundle. When the bolts 56 are aligned with the next set of keeper pins, they are engaged therewith and the piston 62 is then actuated to drive the tube bundle further.
