Abstract

1,183,226. Aromatic carboxylic acids or derivatives. HALCON INTERNATIONAL Inc. 20 March, 1967 [22 March, 1966], No. 12873/67. Heading C2C. The invention relates to a process for the production of an aromatic carboxylic acid or a derivative thereof which comprises reacting an aromatic compound, e.g. toluene, xylene or benzene with carbon monoxide and a metal salt oxidant, e.g. of ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium and platinum preferably palladium chloride in the absence of added halocarbon or halohydrocarbon and preferably in the presence of hydrogen chlorides. A multivalent metal catalyst, e.g. copper, iron, manganese or cobalt may also be employed. The reduced metal salt oxidant may be regenerated and reused in the process. Examples illustrate the production of toluic acid and benzoyl chloride.
