Staiths and elevated structures. - Coal &c. is transferred from a ship to a storage bin by a bucket elevator e', hopper n, belt conveyer o', hopper s, shoot s<2>, and conveyer s'. The conveyer o<1> is pivotally mounted in a travelling gantry a and its outer end is pivotally connected to a sleeve e in which the elevator e<1> is rotatably mounted. A rotatable house f is carried by a turntable f<1> and is connected by a gear g<2> to a gear on the exterior of the top of the elevator e. The gear g<2> is actuated by a motor g and another motor actuates a drum h<1> around which are wound two ropes h<2> connected to the pivoted arm j of the elevator. The tumbler j<1> around which the elevator chain passes at the end of the arm i is provided with projections j<2> which stir the coal and facilitate its entry into the buckets k. A ring u surrounding the elevator e<1> is connected by hinged rods r to a block working on a threaded rod r<3> mounted in the framework b of the conveyer o<1>. Spindles integral with the block are provided with grooved wheels r<4> which run on tracks r<5>. The conveyer o<1> is raised or rowered by ropes t passing over pulleys t<1> which actuate the rod r<3>. The inner end of the framework b is connected to a block .working on a threaded rod c<2> and formed integral with a spindle provided with grooved wheels running on tracks c on the gantry.
