Abstract

1,182,758. Position-finding. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP. 20 May, 1968 [14 Aug., 1967], No. 23825/68. Addition to 1,122,243. Heading H4D. [Also in Divisions El and G4] In a development of Specification 1,122,243, a floating vessel is positioned accurately with respect to a selected underwater location by transmitting an energy beam underwater, deriving signals indicating the distance and direction off-centre of a beam receiving device with respect to the beam axis, and using these signals to control a propulsion unit on the vessel to bring the beam axis and receiving device into alignment. In the embodiment of Fig. 8, transducer 13 is energized to transmit a relatively low frequency broad ultrasonic beam. Vessel 11 (e.g. a drilling barge) is manoeuvered until a maximum in received intensity indicates that the near centre of the beam is detected by a receiving pod comprising three transducers controlling propulsion devices 56, 57 58. Transducer 13 and wellhead transducers 27, 28 are then energized to transmit relatively high frequency narrow beams, whereby the pod locks on to the beam axis of transducer 13 by virtue of the above-mentioned derived signals. The vessel is swung so that receiving pods 47, 48 (on a bracket 46 carrying equipment to be lowered into well 23) similarly lock on to the beams from transducers 27, 28. To enable the vessel's heading to be changed (if the conditions of wind and sea so dictate) while maintaining the vessel on station, a plurality of transducers 13 may be arranged on a circle as in Fig. 6. and selectively energized in diametrically opposed pairs. Pods 24 each having three receiving transducers are used to locate and lock on to the beams from whichever pair of transducers is energized. By using a second circle of transducers 13, concentric with the first, and two pairs of twotransducer pods 24 (one pair for each circle), one circle can control the heading of the vessel and the other circle can control the radial location of the vessel. In various modifications the transducer 13 may transmit from the vessel to the sea-bed instead of vice versa, and one of the wellhead transducers may be used to provide the low frequency beam.
