Abstract

1,182,657. Laminated insulation panel. MONSANTO CO. 31 May, 1967 [2 June, 1966], No. 25018/67. Heading B5N. An insulation panel comprises a thermoplastic foam 1 sandwiched between and bonded to two cellulosic substrates 2; the panel having a reduced thickness longitudinally along two opposite edge areas and a series of transverse creases located along the substrates. The creases may be opposite, as shown, or arranged alternately along the substrates. The foamed plastics material 1 is e.g. a cellulose ether or ester, polycarbonate, polyamide, polyester, polyformaldehyde, vinyl resin, or acrylic resin, or a blend of two or more thermoplastic resins. The substrates 2 are preferably of waterproofed paper. In one method of making the panel, polystyrene is mixed with a pentane foaming agent and extruded through a flat extrusion die. The extrudate foams partially before being passed between a pair of cooling rolls, and the sheet so formed is foamed further in a steam chest. The sheet is trimmed and heated and Kraft liner board is applied to each of its faces. The assembly passes between sets of platen presses which progressively cool it, between a pair of rolls which crush both edges of the assembly, between a pair of rolls which score both sides of the assembly alternately, is cut to length and folded accordion style. The panel may be used for heat and sound insulation of roofs, walls, or floors.
