Abstract
1,182,437. Silicon carbide coating. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. 19 June, 1967 [18 July, 1966], No. 28250/67. Heading B2K. Oxidation and corrosion resistant silicon carbide coating on a base material is produced by contacting a hot surface for the base material with a liquid organo silicon halide, the temperature of the organo silicon halide being maintained below its boiling point, and the temperature of the surface at contact being above the decomposition temperature of the organo silicon halide. The base material may be an electrically conducting material which is heated by electrical resistance heating while in contact with the liquid organo silicon halide, or an electrically insulating material which is preheated prior to contact with the organo silicon halide. The base material may be an electrically conductthe coated filaments may be used for the manufacture of filament wound structures and fibre reinforced structures. The base materials include niobium, tantalum, tungsten, molybdenum, rhenium, silicon, carbon, glass, alumina, graphite. Liquid drops or globules may also be coated. The organosilicon halides may be RS 1 X 3 or RS 1 HX 2 (where R is an alkyl, aryl, alkyl aryl radical, X is halogen).
