Abstract

1,182,412. Protective arrangements. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 4 May, .1967 [5 Feb., 1966], No. 5160/66. Heading H2K. [Also in Division G1] Current in a high voltage line is measured by producing an A.C. carrier signal modulated in a manner representing the value of the current, and coupling this signal through a capacitive coupling incorporating series connected capacitors to a demodulator at low voltage which receives the carrier signal and translates it into an output representing the current value. The current at high voltage on line 12 is transformer coupled at 42 to a voltage-frequency converter contained in the transmitter arrangement 41, the derived frequency being used to modulate a carrier frequency in the transmitter, which is supplied from a pack 48. The output from the transmitter 41 is coupled to a bifilar wound transformer 16 tuned to the carrier frequency and is transmitted via the series capacitor columns 24, 34, to a further bifilar transformer and thence to an output demodulator 44. Power is supplied from an oscillator 45 at a different frequency to that of the carrier frequency via the tuned transformer circuits 18, 17 to the pack 48, where it . is rectified and smoothed before being supplied to the transmitter 41. The bifilar transformer windings are such that the inductances of the windings relative to through currents cancel. The transformercapacitor system 11 may be used in a carriercurrent protective system. The output of demodulator 44 may operate a relay.
