Apparatus for determining the torsion properties of a test piece P Fig. 2 against temperature comprises a clamp 14 for holding one end of the test piece, the other end being connected via a rigid member 34 to a wire D of known properties twisted by a motor m3 which rotates through 180 degrees between switches bl, b2, the resulting angular twist of the test piece being measured by a potentiometer r2. The test is performed inside a heat insulated chamber 18 subjected to a heating programme. An initial low temperature is produced by liquid nitrogen in chamber 18, and the temperature raised by heater r1 associated with fan 43. The heating programme is produced by a multi-track perforated strip, driven by a constant speed motor, controlling a timing arrangement whereby motor m3 is rotated through 180 degrees in alternate directions with appropriate delays to enable the twist measurement to be recorded at predetermined intervals consistent with a pre-established heating programme.
