Apparatus for determining the physical properties of filaments such as threads yarns tapes &c. particularly tenacity and elongation, under wet conditions in which the filament 1 is clamped between two clamps 2, 3, one of the clamps 3 being moved to tension and elongate the filament whilst the other clamp 2 is connected through an arm 4 to a device which measures the force exerted on the filament during elongation and the force necessary to break the filament, during each test the filament, clamps and support being submerged in a liquid 11 such as water comprises a body 9 dependable below the liquid level and means for altering the volume of the part of the body which is submerged so as to compensate for the variation in the submerged volume of the movable clamp 3 and for its support 5 as it is moved to elongate the filament. The body 9 is of uniform cross-section, the same as that of the support 5 of clamp 3. In the embodiment described the movable clamp 3 is always submerged and hence the movement of the body 9 into or out of the liquid by the same amount that the support 5 moves out of or into the liquid leaves the liquid level constant. The body 9 is joined to the support 5 by a bracket 6 and line 7.
