The invention comprises boron-containing heterocyclic compounds and salts thereof, the compounds having the formula wherein Z represents a fused o-phenylene, naphthylene or thienylene ring which may be optionally substituted by one or more alkyl radicals, halogen atoms, etherified hydroxy or mercapto groups, alkyl, aralkyl or aryl sulphonyl groups, amino groups, acylamino groups or nitro groups; R<SP>1</SP> represents a mono- or polynuclear aromatic or heterocyclic radical, optionally substituted by one or more alkyl radicals, etherified hydroxy or mercapto groups, halogen atoms, amino, acylamino or nitro groups, and R<SP>2</SP> represents H, a monovalent cation or the radical They may be obtained by reacting a compound of the formula wherein X and Y represent OH groups, etherified OH groups or halogen atoms with a sulphonic acid hydrazide of formula and, if X and Y do not represent OH groups hydrolysing the residual group X or Y into OH, and optionally converting the OH group into one of the other groups of the formula -OR<SP>2</SP>. Examples are given for the production of the compounds. The above compounds may be applied parenterally or orally to animals to combat various micro-organisms. Some of the above compounds have cytostatic and pharmacological properties.
