Abstract

1,182,077. Laminated carbon cloth. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. 27 May, 1968 [5 Sept., 1967], No. 25228/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Division C3] A resinous composition comprising a mixture of organic solvent-soluble, fusible polyarylene polymers and a curing agent, and which may be cured to an insoluble and infusible state, is used in the manufacture of laminates. The composition may include insoluble and infusible polyphenylene polymers and/or thermoplastic resinous material. The curing agent may be an aromatic polymethylol, or a derivative thereof, and an acid catalyst, or an aromatic polyfunctional sulphonylhalide. The polyarylene polymers may be prepared from mixtures of biphenyl, terphenyl and quaterphenyls or from naphthalene, anthracene and phenanthrene. In an example, a trichlorethylene solution of polyphenylene polymers is mixed with a curing agent obtained by heating p-xylylene glycol and ptoluene sulphonic acid in chloroform, and the solution is used to impregnate carbon cloth which is dried and then laminated by heating while under pressure.
