Abstract

A process for the production of reinforced synthetic resin articles comprises impregnating or coating a reinforcement material with a fusible resinous composition, interleaving the coated or impregnated reinforcement so produced with a reinforcement material previously coated or impregnated with a second fusible resinous composition capable of reacting with the first resinous composition so as to cure it to a substantially thermoset condition and subjecting the assembly so produced to the action of heat and pressure. The reinforcement may be in the form of continuous filaments or threads of spun fibre, woven or knitted cloth, felt, mat, or paper it may be of glass, cotton, asbestos, polyamide or other fibre or filament-forming material. Specified combinations of resinous compositions are (i) an epoxide resin prepared by reacting a phenolic novolak with epichlorhydrin, and an aniline resin prepared by reacting aniline with formaldehyde, (ii) an epoxide resin as in (i) above and a resinous composition comprising hexahydrophthalic anhydride, polyvinyl acetate and acetone, (iii) an epoxide resin as in (i) above and a resinous adduct of an epoxide resin and diethylamine prepared by the method described in Specification 832,189, (iv) urea-aldehyde resins and phenolic novolak resins, (v) phenolic novolak resins and phenolic resole resins. Either or both of the resinous compositions may include fillers such as chalk, slate flour, metal powders, starch, wood flour, plasticizers such as polyoxyalkylene polysulphide rubber, dioctyl phthalate and glycol, accelerators, retarders, anti-oxidants, fungicides, dyes and pigments. Woven or knitted fabrics may be impregnated by passage through a bath containing a solution of resinous composition in a volatile solvent, then through nip rollers to control the resin content of the fabric. The resinous composition may also be applied in molten state. Filaments or rovings may be similarly impregnated followed by passage through an orifice to control resin content. Laminates in the form of flat sheets or shaped articles may be produced by assembling alternate piles of the two impregnated reinforcements and casing the resultant assembly in a suitable mould under heat and pressure. Impregnated rovings may be wound on to a mandrel to form a pipe or tube. Comminuted rovings, mixed in appropriate proportions may be employed for production of mouldings by forming them to a desired shape in a matched mould under heat and pressure.
