Abstract

1,181,963. Servo brake systems; valves. HARRY FERGUSON RESEARCH Ltd. 14 April. 1967 [15 April, 1966], No. 16556/66. Addition to 1,101,582. Headings F2F and F2V. In a vehicle according to any one of the claims of Specification 1,101,582, a pressureresponsive control valve 56a is interposed between the valve 14 and the servo-mechanism 11 to control fluid flow from the latter to the former subsequent to anti-skid operation to thereby control reapplication of the brakes. When the brakes are off pipe 56 is connected to the vacuum tank 10 and pipe 55 is connected to atmosphere. The vacuum in chamber 73 is the same as that in chambers d and c so that the atmospheric pressure always present in chamber b opens the valve. During normal brake application valve 56a remains open. During anti-skid operation valve 14 connects pipe 56 to atmosphere and pipe 55 to vacuum tank 10, the pressure in chamber 73 rises to an extent dependent on the time of operation of the rotary inertia device 12. Under slippery road conditions and consequently slow acceleration of the vehicle transmission chamber 73 is connected to atmosphere long enough for the pressure to rise above the predetermined vacuum level. The pressure in chamber c and the loading of spring k then close the valve which remains closed during the pressure rise, air flow being permitted through flap valve r. When the rotary inertia device again becomes inoperative the valve 14 again connects pipes 55 and 56 respectively to atmosphere and the vacuum tank. Withdrawal of air from chamber 73 is restricted as the valve 56a remains closed whilst air can only pass through a passage u or slots (q), Fig. 3 (not shown), thereby delaying reapplication of the brakes and permitting controlled braking suited to the slippery conditions. Connection 55a, which has a non-return valve 55b, assists the expulsion of air from chamber 72 during anti-skid operation. In modifications the vacuum servomechanism may be replaced by an hydraulic servo-mechanism and the anti-skid device may operate in response to changes in linear inertia.
