Abstract
1,181,662. Insulators; surge diverters; cable seating ends. CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD. 11 May, 1967 [1 April, 1966], No. 14595/66. Headings H2C, H2E and H2H. [Also in Division H1] An oil bath insulator bushing or housing for a cable sealing end or surge diverter comprises a stack of separate elements, one nesting in another, at least some of which elements are shaped to form an annular oil bath, with the next adjacent element above each oil bath forming a protective rain shed extending radially outwardly beyond the oil bath surface and spaced so that the minimum distance of any part of an upper element above the oil surface below is at least as great as the radial length of the oil surface. As shown, Fig. 1, a post insulator is formed of a stack of alternate oil bath and shed elements 10 and 11, of frustoconical shape. The oil bath 13 is formed in the lower of each pair of elements 13, and is covered by the flange 14 on the shed element above. The elements may be moulded from glass, glass/ceramic or resin bonded fibre material or porcelain, and may be secured to one another by a low melting point glass or synthetic resin. Top and bottom termination elements 15, 16 nest in the stack. In other arrangements (Figs. 2 to 5, not shown) the sheds are the same shape, an annular ring on the upper surface of the shed forming the oil bath; a ridge on the underside of the shed reduces the tendency of the wind to blow the oil out of the bath; the tops of the frusto-conical elements are open. In Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), each element has a stepped hollow cylindrical body.
