Abstract

1,181,346. Coated glass fabrics. DOW CORNING CORP. 10 June, 1968 [29 June, 1967], No. 27418/68. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] A composition for treating glass fibres and fabrics is an aqueous dispersion of (a) a liquid hydroxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxane, (b) a silane R n SiR' 4-n , wherein R is an optionally substituted C1-20 hydrocarbon radical, R' is a hydrolysable radical other than a halogen atom and n is 0 or 1, and (c) a siloxane condensation catalyst Preferably there are 5-70 p.b.w. (b) per 100 p.b.w. (a). Suitable values for R and R' are listed; suitable catalysts (c) are strong bases, mineral acids and dialkyltin diacylates. Preferably the dispersion contains 2-5 wt% of (a). In Examples dispersions are prepared using (a) a neutral anionic or cationic emulsion of a hydroxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxane of 100 to 1,500,000 cSt/25‹C; (b) MeSi(OMe) 3 , PrSi(OMe) 3 , PhSi(OMe) 3 , MeSi(Oi-Pr) 3 , Si(OPr) 4 , Si[OCH 2 .CH(Et)(CH 2 ) 3 CH 3 ] 4 , H 2 NC 2 H 4 -NH-(CH 2 ) 3 Si(OMe) 3 H 2 C = C(CH 3 ) #/O\ COO(CH 2 ) 3 Si(OMe) 3 , H 2 C - CH - CH 2 O (CH 2 ) 3 Si(OMe) 3 , CH 2 =CHSi(OAc) 3 , MeSi [ON=C(Me)(Et)] 3 , MeSi(NH 2 ) 3 , H 2 N(CH 2 ) 3 Si (OEt) 3 , C 20 H 41 Si(OMe) 3 and C 6 H 11 Si(OC 2 H 4 OMe) 3 , and (c) dibutyltin dilaurate, dibutyltin diacetate, octadecyltrimethylammonium hydroxide, benzyltrimethylammonium hydroxide, KOH or HCI; in Ex. 5 there are also added an acrylic handbuilder, a blue pigment, a pigment binder and CH 3 COOC 2 H 4 NHC 2 H 4 NH(CH 2 ) 3 Si(OMe) 3 . The dispersions are used to treat fibreglass cloth, which is then dried and cured at 177‹C for 3 mins. The catalyst (c) may be applied as a separate dispersion to fabric previously treated with a dispersion of (a) and (b).
