Abstract
The physical properties, e.g, abrasion resistance, tear strength, recovery from creasing, hand, slippage and degradation when exposed to sunlight, of textiles are improved by applying thereto both a colloidal dispersion of silica and a siloxane containing silicon-bonded hydrogen atoms and hydrocarbon radicals and thereafter curing the siloxane on the material. Preferably the material is impregnated with a composition comprising an aqueous emulsion of the siloxane, colloidal silica dispersion and a curing catalyst, e.g. an octoate or naphthenate of Zn, Sn, Pb, Al or Zr (see Group IV (a)). The composition may also contain an aqueous dispersion of an aminoplast, e.g. a urea- or melamine-formaldehyde resin. Textile materials specified are those made of cellulose esters of low hydroxyl content, as described in Specifications 758,442 and 791,391, or of higher hydroxyl content, e.g. cellulose acetate of 53 to 55% acetyl content, nylon, polyethylene terephthalate, acrylonitrile homo- and co-polymers, vinyl chloride homo-and co-polymers, rayon, cotton and wool. Examples are given.ALSO:A composition for treating textiles (see Groups IV (c) and VIII) comprises a mxiture of a siloxane containing Si-bonded hydrogen atoms and hydrocarbon radicals and a colloidal dispersion of silica. Siloxanes disclosed are preferably liquid at room temperature and contain methyl hydrogenosiloxy units with or without dimethyl- or dihydrocarbonyl-siloxy units and may also contain trimethyl- and monomethyl-siloxy units. The colloidal dispersion may be a silica sol as described in U.S.A. Specifications 2,244,325, 2,285,449, 2,285,477 and 2,375,738, and may contain spherical particles of diameter from 40 to 80 m m , or it may be a dispersion of the product made by burning SiCl4. The composition may be made by mixing an aqueous emulsion of the siloxane, containing an emulsifying agent, or a mixture of the siloxane and emulsifying agent, with an aqueous dispersion of the colloidal silica, preferably in amounts of 0.5 to 1 part of silica per part of siloxane. Curing catalyst, e.g. the octoates and naphthenates of Zn, Sn, Pb, Al and Zr, and aqueous solutions or dispersions of aminoplasts, e.g. urea- and melamine-formaldehye resins may also be added.
