Abstract

1,181,344. Pneumatic brakes. MGM. BRAKES Inc. 17 May, 1968 [9 June, 1967], No. 23657/68. Heading F2F. A pneumatic brake actuator 10 is provided with an auxiliary brake actuating mechanism 12 comprising a piston 38 normally held in the brakes off position by pressure in chamber A provided with a central sleeve 56 in which is threadably engaged a plug 66 having a hexagonal head 68 accessible from outside by removing a vent plug 68a. Normally, the brakes are actuated by supplying pressure through line 80 to displace diaphragm 18 and piston 30 against the action of spring 36. The auxiliary brake actuating mechanism is operated by releasing the pressure in chamber A so that spring 54 displaces piston 38 and hence push-rod 46 and piston 30 in the brakes on direction. To release the brakes, vent plug 68a is removed and a socket wrench (not shown) is inserted into sleeve 56 to engage the head 68 of plug 66 which is then turned to allow spring 36 to release the brakes.
