Abstract

Relates to protection and control circuits for a log saw comprising a log-carrying carriage 18 movable on rails 19 in front of a band saw blade 4 and carrying headstocks 21 movable transversely of the direction of movement of the carriage, each headstock carrying at least one clamp 25, 26 adjustable in height, the frame 1 of the saw carrying a guard 8 slidable parallel to the blade 4 between an upper position exposing the blade for sawing and a lower, safe position. When all the clamps 26 are moved to their fully lowered rest positions 26a and the headstocks 21 are moved to a rest position 21a withdrawn from the saw blade 4, they actuate respective limit switches G 1 , G 2 , G 3 , K to energize a relay DP to supply power to an electric motor P to lower the guard 8 to its safe position. The guard 8 is mounted on a slide 7 movable between vertical guides 6 on the frame 1, and is drivingly connected to the motor P by a chain 11. A relay MP controls energization of the motor P to raise the guard 8. At its upper and lower limits of movement, the guard actuates respective limit switches R, Q to stop the motor P. The headstocks 21 are traversed by a leadscrew 23 driven by a motor M controlled by relays VM, RM. The carriage is moved by a motor A controlled by relays VA, RA. With the carriage in a predetermined rest position, a limit switch N is actuated to energize relay DP to lower the guard 8 if it is not already in the safe position. Manual push-button switches cmp, cdp also control the raising and lowering, respectively, of the guard, and a contact op controlled by a sensing device O which senses any obstacle in the path of the guard ensures complete raising of the guard before a log reaches the blade. Push-button switches cvm and D are closed to advance the headstocks towards the saw blade, and crm to withdraw the headstocks. Push-button switches cva, cra are effective to control movement of the carriage by the motor A only when the guard is in the raised position (ga closed) or all the clamps 26 are in their rest positions 26a. When the clamps 26 are in their rest positions, contacts gm 1 , gm 2 , gm 3 are closed to automatically move the headstocks to their rest position 21a.
