Abstract

[Also in Division C3] A blend of polymeric materials for the extrusion casting of high gloss, relatively high slip film comprises from 80% to 98% by weight of polypropylene homopolymer, from 2% to 20% by weight of a copolymer of ethylene and propylene having an ethylene content of less than 30% by weight of the copolymer and an isotactic content of at least 50% and a sufficient amount of slip additive to impart to a film cast from the blend a coefficient of friction less than 0À3. Both the homopolymer and copolymer may have isotactic components of at least 50% (preferably above 90%) by weight and a melt flow between 3 and 15. The slip additive is a C 15 -C 24 fatty amide, e.g. erucyl amide, oleyl amide, stearyl amide or hydrogenated tallow amides, and typically amounts to between 0À075% and 0À2% by weight of the blend. An anti-block agent such as diatomaceous earth or finelydivided silica may be included in similar proportions. The materials may be blended in particle form (pellets) at ordinary temperatures with the necessary intermixing at elevated temperatures taking place in the extruder itself. An example is directed to the production of polypropylene film having a calliper of between about 0À5 and 8 mils by extruding a dry blend of 0À20 inch pellets of polypropylene, 0À24 inch pellets of ethylene-propylene copolymer (3% ethylene content) and slip additive (80% erucyl amide, 12% oleyl amide and 8% stearyl amide) in stated proportions through a barrel of diameter 3À5 inch and of length-todiameter ratio of 24 : 1 on to a casting or chill roll providing a film take-off speed of 245 feet per minute. A vacuum chamber was positioned between the extruder and the chill roll with its suction slot facing the trailing edge of the film. The melt temperature of the polymeric material was 555‹ F., the die temperature 550‹ F. and the chill roll was maintained at 80‹ F. There was less " plate-out " of the slip additive the chill roll when the ethylene-propylene copolymer was included in the blend.
