Abstract

1317808 Coated film LA CELLOPHANE SA 31 July 1970 [1 Aug 1969] 37195/70 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] A coated, biaxially oriented film is prepared by melt extruding a film of a blend of isotactic polypropylene with between 1% and 20% by weight of a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate in which the vinyl acetate content is between 10% and 50% by weight cooling the extruded film, biaxially orienting the film and applying thereto an anchoring coating composition and/or a heat sealable or other coating composition. An optimum polymer composition is one in which the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer has a melt index below 70, a vinyl acetate content between 25% and 50% and is present in the blend in an amount within the range 5% to 10% by weight. The film may be surface treated with a corona discharge or subjected to surface oxidation and may be coated with an anchoring layer of, for example, conventional anchoring agents having a base of copolymers, acrylic derivatives or melamine/formaldehyde resins prior to being coated with a heat-sealable coating, e.g. a vinylidene chloride copolymer or a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate, or some other coating. In examples polypropylene-ethylene/vinyl acetate films are prepared by melt extrusion, cooled, stretched biaxially, heat set at 170‹C for a few seconds and surface treated to a corona discharge. The films are then coated with either an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of vinylidene chloride and methyl acrylate (with or without an anchoring layer of a heat hardenable polyester resin or a vinylidene chloride: copolymer), an aqueous emulsion of a copolymer of ethylenevinyl acetate or an ethyl acetate solution of a vinyl acetate/vinyl chloride copolymer.
