Abstract

1,179,974. Converging Disc granulating apparatus. MUHLENBAU DRESDEN VEB. 21 Aug., 1968, No. 39914/68. Heading B5A. Apparatus for granulating bulk material in powder, piece, swarf or fibre form comprises two similar disc dies 1, 2 with conical surfaces 15, 16 rotatingly mounted on shafts so that the shaft axes intercept at an obtuse angle and the dies contact on a common generator of their conical surfaces, a feed device and a discharge device and means to connect the two elements supporting the dies in a force-operated engagement. As shown, the dies 1, 2 are mounted on rotatable shafts 10, 11 in positions determined by centre pins 27, 28 and fixing screws 26. Each shaft 10, 11 is mounted in a member 3, 4; the members are pivotally connected about a vertical pivot 19, and the discs are held together by a member 9 fitting through holes in the members 7, 8 attached to 3 and 4, an overload safety device 22 being fitted to the member 9. The shaft 10 may be directly driven from a motor with shaft 30 engaging a sleeve 31 in the shaft 10. The dies may be pierced; the piercings on the die lying on circles decreasing in axial and peripheral separation as the distance from the axis of rotation increases and the piercings in one die being arranged opposite the unpierced parts in the other. Alternatively, the die faces may be shaped with depressions surrounded by webs, raised pins, radial, and peripheral grooves or spiral grooves, the die pairs being chosen so that material caught between the dies will be compressed into discrete compacts.
