A device for applying pressure to urge one face of a moving corrugated board 211 into close contact with a heating surface during passage of the board thereover comprises a hood 210 supported above the heating surface, the hood and the moving board in use defining a plenum, a blower fan 213, for supplying gas under pressure to the plenum, and means for vertically adjusting the hood relative to one face of the board to control the rate of escape of the gas from between the hood and the moving board, the hood having flanges 222 substantially parallel with the opposite face of the moving board and spaced therefrom which provide an escape route for the gas under pressure and require no adjustment to compensate for boards of different widths. As shown, the vertical adjustment of the hood is provided by brackets 217 secured to the hood and threaded on screws 216 rotatably mounted on a steam chest 212, the screws being rotatable via a common chain 219. The hood includes dampers A, D in ducts A 1 , D 1 communicating with the atmosphere, and dampers B, C in ducts B 1 , C 1 communicating with the plenum. When the board 211 is moving the dampers A, C are open, the dampers B, D closed and the air flow is as shown. When movement of the board is interrupted the positions of the dampers are automatically reversed so that air is withdrawn from the plenum, thus drawing the board 211 upwardly into contact with the flanges 222 and away from the steam chest 212 to prevent scorching. In one method of making double-faced corrugated board, the tips of the flutes of a single-faced board are roller coated with glue, a back liner is contacted with the glued flutes between rollers, and the doublefaced board so formed dried and set between a series of steam chests and a belt running below a series of the above described pressure devices. The end devices of the series cool the belt before it is slit longitudinally and cut transversely.
