Abstract

[Also in Divisions B3; Cl and C7] The surface of a hot steel ingot or continuous-casting strand is protected by the application thereto of a layer of B 2 O 3 or alkali metal borate or a composition containing the same. The application step immediately follows the casting or is performed continuously with a rolling of the ingot or strand which is still at a temperature sufficiently high to fuse the applied substance to a continuous glaze coating. The composition may contain Al 2 O 3 or SiO 2 . The application may be performed by spraying or dipping, or by passage through a fluidized bed. The B 2 O 3 or borate dissolves any scale. The resulting glaze is transparent permitting detection of surface defects. The glazed metal may be further machined or rolled.
