Abstract
1,179,831. Exercising apparatus. SCIENTIFIC EXERCISING EQUIPMENT Ltd. 17 April, 1967 [19 Jan., 1966; 6 April, 1966; 23 June, 1966], Nos. 2526/66; 15368/66 and 28081/66. Heading A6M. An apparatus for exercising the body comprises a frame, a flexible elongated member which is partly inside and partly outside the frame, means for exerting frictional opposition to attempted movement of the member with respect to the frame in one direction but to present no significant opposition to relative movement in the opposite direction, the means operating such that the pressure between friction surfaces necessary to provide said frictional opposition is generated by the attempted relative movement of the elongated member, and means for regulating and adjusting the value of the frictional opposition. Thus the apparatus comprises two functionally separate parts, namely a mechanism arranged to cause frictional opposition to the withdrawal of a webbing or cord (the flexible elongated member) and a mechanism arranged to draw back the webbing or cord when the withdrawal force is released. An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in Figure 1, wherein a webbing 39, which is wrapped around the outer surface of a cylindrical member 36, contacts friction surfaces 52 of the wedges 53. In operation, the webbing 39 is pulled via the bar handle 44 and the friction surfaces, contacting the webbing since the wedges bear against the rollers 63, create a frictonal resistance to movement of the webbing. The wedges are housed in a movable housing which in operation, moves until the rollers 63 fall into the recesses 64-this movement will be opposed by the tension in the spring 66 (this tension may be adjusted by screwing the part 19 in or out of the frame 10). The spring 37, affixed to the cylindrical member 36, acts to draw the webbing back into the apparatus when the handle 44 is released. Further embodiments of the invention are described and illustrated (1) wherein the friction surface bears on the inside or outside of a rotatable cylindrical body, said body being rotated by movement of an elongated member, and (2) wherein a rope or cord (the elongated member) is wrapped several times around the helically grooved external surface of a cylinder, the rotation of which is against the tension in a spring.
