Actuated or applied by backward pressure of tractor or relaxation of pull or push; force-transmitting mechanism.-A railway vehicle brake of the kind adapted to be applied by the buffers when these are pressed inwards comprises at each side of the vehicle a sliding rod B coupled to the buffer A engaging, through a spring B<1>, a lever C pivoted at D and having the brake rods H, J connected thereto. To enable the buffer-applying mechanism to be thrown out of action, the lever C is formed in two parts, Fig. 4, pivoted at C<4>, and the upper part swings idly about this pivot when a pin C<5> which locks the parts rigidly together, is removed. Operation of the brake by hand is effected by the lever M loosely mounted on the spindle D and having a projection M', Fig. 7, for engagement with a projection N<1> on the spindle.
