GAR BRAKE.
Patented Feb. .7, 1888.

I i UNITED STATE A T OFFICE. V
ABRAM REESE, E PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNQR-TO THE REES SAFETY BRAKE COMPANY, (LIMITED,) OF SAME PLACE.
especially to that class of brakes in which the- IO CAR-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,438, dated PebruaryV, 1888.
Application filed May 12, 1887. Serial No. 237,938. (No model.)
ToaZZ whom it may cgncern: I
Be it known that I, ABRAM REESE, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Brakes; and I do hereby I declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and
exact description thereof.
My invention relates to car-brakes, and more brake is applied another. v
In an application filed of even date herewith I have described a brake which consists, generally, in backing thedraw head with two springs, one of which is longer'than the other,
by the impact of one car on and bears against the draw-head,so as to permit I a certain amount of movement-of the drawhead and. draw-bar before itis necessary to compress both springs. draw-bar is the brake-operating lever, an intervening space, which is'taken up by a fillingblock, existing between this lever and the end ofthe draw-bar, so. that by removing or raising this filling-block the draw-bar can move-backward without applying the brakes. My present invention relates to a modificationof the filling-block used in thisbrake; and to'that end it consists, generally, in interposing bev tween the end of the draw-bar and a pivoted brake lever a sliding rocking dog or block,
which when in one position transmits the thrust of the draw-bar to the brake-lever, and in the other permits the backward play of the draw-bar without affecting the brakes; and the invention also consists in a spring-backed draw-head having a draw-bar attached thereto, a rocking sliding block in the'rear of said drawbar and in line therewith, and a brake-operat-ing lever connected to the brakes in the rear of said rocking block, and against which it impinges, whereby the thrust on the draw-head can be transmitted to, the brake when desired;
The invention alsov consists in certain other improvements, all of which will be more fully In the rear of the- 7 end of a car with improved brakeapplied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail view. Fig; 3 isa section on the line xw, Fig. 1; andFig. a is a central horizontal section.
Like letters refer'to like parts. in figures of the drawings. I 7 v The draw-head a'slides in suitable guides in each of the the'end'of the car-frame b,an'd has attached j thereto the draw-bar or extension-rod c, which extends through openings in the frontand rear follower-plates, d e,and in the'rearof the latter carries a pin or key, j, which throws the strain v on the follower-plate when the pull comes on the draw-bar.
and inside of this springis an inner coiled spring, h, which bears at one end against the rear follower-plate and at its other extends through an enlarged hole in the front follower.-
plate until it bears against the rear end of the;
which slides in a slot, formed in eaeh'side of a supportingpiece, Z, attached to the} under side of the car-frame, this rocking block haw Interposed between these front and rear follower-plates, and bearingv against them at its ends, is'the outer-coiled spring, g,
ing a downwardly-extending arm, m, which is connected by alinkgt, and'yielding connection 1 n to a rock-arm, 0, secured to a rock-shaft, 0, which in turn is providedwitha rock-arm, 10, operated by a rod, g, which extendsto the top of the car-body, where it is accessible. The yielding connection a, which consistsof two springs-one on each side of the armO-takes up any sudden thrust or strainwhich may be vents the breaking of parts. To prevent the 9 1 thrown on the rocking block 71, and thus prerocking block tfrom coming; out of the supporting-piece Z, a rod or pin,m, is inserted across the opening in the support-piece in front of the arm m, in which the block 'is placed. .Pivoted to the supporting-piece lie the brakeoperating lever 7', one endof which is directly in the line of movement of the block 13, so that as the latter is moved back by the 'backward'txco movement of the draw-bar it will rock the brake-lever, and through the intervening connections between the latter and the brakes applythem. The connecting rods and levers used to connect the brake-operating lever with the brakes are the same as those now in use, and 7 therefore no detail description of them will be given.
The operation of the device is asfellows: If the preceding car or locomotive should be brought to a stop or slowed up, its impact on the draw-head a will cause the latter to compress the inner spring until the draw-head strikes the front follower-plate, when any further movement is resisted by both springs. During this backward movement of the drawhead and draw-bar, if the block iis directly in line with the end of the latter, the block will be-forced backward and carry with it the end of the brake-operating lever r, so that the brakes are applied to the wheels. If, however, the rod q is moved so as to rock the blockz' on its pivot or studs upward,a sufficient space will be left below the block for the draw-bar to re cede in without afi'ecting the brake'lever, and the brakes will not be applied by any impact on the draw-head.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a car brake, the combination of a spring-backed draw-head having a draw-bar or extension-rod attached thereto, a; brake-operating lever in the rear of said draw-bar, and a sliding rocking filling-block between said brake-operating lever and the draw-bar andindependent thereof, substantiallyas described.
2. In a car brake, the combination of a draw-head having an extension-rod or drawbar attached thereto, a brake-operating lever in the rear of said draw-bar, asliding rocking filling-block between said draw-bar and operating lever and independent thereof, and means for rocking said block, substantially as described.
3. In a car-brake, the combination of the draw-head having a draw-bar attached thereto, a sliding rocking block, 1, having the downward-extending arm m, a brake-operating lever, 1", and means connected to said arm m for rocking said block, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I, the said ABRAM REESE, have hereunto set my hand.
ABRAM REESE.
