Abstract

1,179,470. Anti-jack-knife devices. P. ROSS. 21 March, 1968 [28 March, 1967], No. 14069/67. Heading B7T. An anti-jack-knife device for use with a fifth wheel coupling comprises a substantially cylindrical casing 18 fixed to trailer skid plate 12 and having extending thereinto an upward extension of king pin 13 journalled in said plate, there extending radially from said casing and said extension vanes 29, 26 respectively, in fluid sealing contact with the casing walls and the extension to define chambers 34, 35 which contain hydraulic fluid, the chambers being connected by ports 32, 33 and a spool valve 31 such that during braking of the tractor-trailer combination coupled by the fifth wheel, the spool valve is moved to block communication between the chambers, rotation of the king-pin being prevented in the fifth wheel plate 11 by a tongue 28 in contact with the forks of said plate. The spool is caused to block communication between the chambers by being connected to a diaphragm within a casing 37, such that during braking pressure fluid is supplied to the casing at one side of the diaphragm and thereby moves the spool. The fifth wheel plate 11 is pivoted to the trailer at 14 and clamps 15 hold the king-pin in position with respect to the plate.
