Abstract

1,179,275. Air filter with automatic by-pass. BERG EUROPA G.m.b.H. 13 Feb., 1967 [11 Feb., 1966], No. 6872/67. Heading B1T. An air filter, for use in a vehicle's air brake circuit, comprises a housing 1 in which a filter element 11, 12 is able to move axially to open a by-pass passage between ports 3, 4 irrespective of the direction of flow. Cylindrical screen wall 12 is divided into two by annular flange 16, gas flowing inwards through one half then outwards through the other. The filter element 11, 12 is slidably mounted on post 10 with spring 15 urging its flange 16 against an annular flange 9, which is itself urged by spring 8 against annular seat 5. With flow from port 3 to port 4, clogging of the lower half of the element raises the pressure and lifts flange 16 from flange 9. With flow from port 4 to port 3, excess pressure forces flanges 9, 16 downwards and away from seat 5. Element 11, 12, post 10, flange 9 are all carried by a disc 6, which is slidable out of housing 1 after pivoting end cover 20 round pivot 21. Extension 25 of disc 6 is urged into recess 20a to prevent cover 20 being opened while the housing interior is pressurised.
