Abstract

1,179,020. Aqueous dispersions of polymers of vinyl propionate. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 19 May, 1967 [20 May, 1966], No. 23399/67. Heading C3P. [Also in Division D1] Aqueous dispersions of polymers of vinyl propionate are prepared by polymerization of vinyl propionate and other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers with water-soluble initiators in aqueous phase in the presence of emulsifiers, monoethylenically unsaturated monomers containing at least 50% by weight of styrene being polymerized in an aqueous medium and the polymerization being continued in aqueous medium until at least the major proportion by weight of these monomers has been polymerized, with an addition of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers containing at least 50% by weight of vinyl propionate, the amount of monomers used being such that the resultant polymer contains 40 to 85% by weight of vinyl propionate and 5 to 25% by weight of styrene as polymerized units. In the examples are used: styrene, tert.-butyl acrylate, acrylic acid, acrylamide, vinyl propionate and N-methylolmethacrylamide butyl ether; potassium persulphate, aqueous solution of a sulphonated reaction product of ethylene oxide and iso-octylphenol, the sodium salt of a mixture of hydroxyoctadecanesulphonic acid and octadecene sulphonic acid, aqueous ammonia solution, and turkey red oil. Aqueous dispersions of the polymers containing ammonium nitrate may be used to impregnate cloth.
