Abstract

1,178,910. Thermal switches. CROWELL DESIGNS Inc. 3 Oct., 1967 [16 Feb., 1967], No. 44850/67. Heading H1N. [Also in Division G1] A temperature responsive switch 10, 11, Fig. 1, is encapsulated with an electric heater 23 whereby the switch is used to detect the level of a liquid due to the thermal element being cooled thereby. The bi-metal snap disc 14 carrying contact 11 is mounted in a terminal 15 encased in a metal sheath 19. The electric heating coil 23 surrounds the sheath 19 and comprises a tapped low-wattage coil portion in permanent circuit across the power supply and a high-wattage coil portion in circuit when the switch 10, 11 is closed. The high-wattage heater coil ensures that the temperature is raised rapidly when there is no liquid detected. The switch is sealed in a capsule 28 of glass or epoxy resin. In a particular application the switch controls a bilge pump in response to the water level.
