1095161 Controlling electric liquid heaters ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 March 1965 [11 March 1964] 10297/64 Headings A4A AB and AB2 An electric kettle or other electrically heated vessel has an open topped pocket at or toward the bottom of the vessel below the heating element and containing liquid the temperature of which lags appreciably behind that of the main bulk of liquid until turbulence occurs on boiling, and a thermally responsive means arranged to respond to the temperature in such pocket to control the heating element. In the arrangement shown the said pocket is a small-well 12 in the bottom of a kettle having a sheathed heating element 7. A stud 14 of a bi-metallic strip 13 is secured to the bottom of the well 12. A boil-dry cut-out unit 10 includes a further bi-metallic element 10a in contact with the element 7 via a thermal conductor 11. The contacts 18, Fig.5 (not shown) of a further switch may be connected in parallel with the contacts 16 operated by the bi-metallic strip 13 to provide an over-riding control. In an alternative embodiment, Fig.6 (not shown) said pocket is a metal cup 22 secured to the mounting housing 20 of an immersion heating element 7<SP>1</SP> In further alternative arrangements the pocket may be in the side of a vessel near the bottom or may be formed in a baffle.
