Abstract
1,178,801. Scouring wool. VEPA A.G. 10 Jan., 1968 [28 Jan., 1967; 14 April, 1967], No. 1362/68. Heading D1L. Apparatus for scouring raw wool, comprises a bath 1 of treatment liquid and at least two conveying elements 6, 12 for moving the wool through the bath, at least one of the conveying elements 6 or 12 being at least partially immersed in the liquid of the bath and that portion which is submerged and is in contact with the wool being conveyed is divided into two sections, a section on to which the wool is fed and which is connected to a source of suction and a section from which the wool is discharged which is connected to a source of internal water pressure. The wool is engaged on only one side of the formed layer by the conveying elements. Wool 7 is fed onto a bath of treatment liquid 8 is sucked against the underside of an inclined endless conveyor 6 which dips below the liquid level. At its lower end the conveyor passes around a perforated roller 9 which is connected to a pump 10 to force liquid from within the conveyor outwardly, through the wool which it discharges upon the conveyor. The wool then floats across the liquid until it is picked up by the upper run of another endless conveyor 12 angled upwardl yout of the liquid and provided with a suction box 13. On leaving this conveyor the wool passes between a pair of squeeze rolls 15. The treatment bath is provided with a perforated floor 2 intermediate the base of the bath and the level of liquid so that dirt washed out of the wool settles in a lower section 4, 5 of the bath and collects as a sludge which is removed. The pump 10 of conveyor 6 also serves to provide the initial suction. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2) the conveyor 6 is located horizontally beneath the liquid level and the take-out conveyor 12 is replaced by a perforated drum 17 connected to a source of suction 18. In this embodiment the wool is fed onto the upper run of conveyor 6 and passes around the undersurface of drum 17. In a third embodiment (Fig. 3 not shown) the wool is floated on a liquid treating bath and is successively brought into contact with the underside of two spaced perforated drums, each drum having a plurality of slats around its surface. Each drum has a main chamber connected to a source of suction which draws the wool against the drum surface and the treating liquid therethrough. In a lower quadrant of each drum is a chamber into which liquid is pumped from the bath through an end face of the drum, the liquid then being forced out through a perforated plate, the perforated drum surface, and through the fibres thus detaching them from the drum face. At the discharge end of the bath there is again provided a perforated drum connected to a source of suction.
