Abstract

1,178,756. Slip couplings. BORG-WARNER CORP. 6 June, 1967, No. 26104/67. Heading F2U. In a slip coupling, particularly in a farm tractor transmission, wherein a driven (driving) member is disposed between and frictionally engages co-rotating driving (driven) members, the driving members are axially spaced a predetermined distance apart and the driven member is axially resiliently compressible, being formed of friction linings 45 riveted to alternate crests of a continuously corrugated resilient, e.g. steel, rim 41. The latter, together with a plate 59 secured thereto by spacer rivets 61, is rotationally resiliently connected by tangential springs 63 to a hub 53 splined on a shaft S. Slots 67 in a hub flange 57 provide clearance for the rivets 61. As shown, the driving members comprise a mounting plate 11 bolted to a flywheel F, and a presser plate 23. In assembly, the mounting plate 11 is secured to a torque meter. Torque is applied to the hub 53 and, simultaneously, an axial force is applied to the presser plate until a predetermined torque value is metered. The appled torque is then removed, and the presser and mounting plates are welded together at 29. In Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), the presser plate (223) is rotationally connected to the mounting plate (211) by a ring of short and long axially extending presser plate tongues which engage short and long mounting plate slots (220), (222). The short tongues are screw threaded to receive nuts and locknuts (232), (234) by which the presser and mounting plates are held a predetermined distance apart.
