[Also in Division G2] A film base material comprises a film of synthetic linear polyester of highly hydrophobic character having superimposed thereon a layer A adherent thereto consisting predominantly of a copolymer of a vinyl halogenoester or vinyl cyanoester with acrylamide or methacrylamide or with a N-methylol derivative of acrylamide or methacrylamide. The film base material may be of polyethylene terephthalate which may be biaxially oriented. The copolymer of layer A may comprise a vinyl mono-di- or tri-halogenoacetate, such as vinylchloroacetate. The copolymer may also comprise vinyl monocyanoacetate. A preferred copolymer is of vinyl mono-, di- or tri-chloro-acetate or of vinyl monocyanoacetate with 1 to 30 mole percent of acrylamide, methacrylamide or N-methylol derivative of acrylamide or methacrylamide. Superimposed on the layer may be a layer B(1) comprising gelatin and the layer 13(1) may also comprise a proportion of the copolymer of layer A. Over layer B(1) may be a layer of a gelatino silver halide photographic emulsion. A layer B(2) of cellulose or cellulose acetate butyrate may also be applied over the layer A. The surface of the cellulose acetate of cellulose acetate butyrate may be hydrolyzed and the surface of the layer B(2) may be impregnated with a light-sensitive diazonium salt. A layer B(3) of polyvinyl acetal may be applied over the layer A, the surface of which may be impregnated with a light-sensitive diazonium salt. A layer B(4) of partially hydrolyzed polyvinyl acetate may also be applied over the layer A, the surface of this layer B(4) may be impregnated with a diazonium salt. A halogen-containing phenolic substance may be incorporated into the coating composition for the application of layer A, or the surface of the film may be pre-treated with such a phenolic substance. Numerous suitable phenols are specified. Cross-linking agents such as tetraisopropyl titanate and hexamethoxy-methyl melamine may also be present in the layer A. The copolymers of layer A may be applied as solutions in organic solvents or as emulsions or latices. Wetting agents and protective colloids may be present if necessary. The coatings may be applied by dip-coating, bead-coating or reverse roller coating.
