Abstract

1,208,821. Coated polyester film. BEXFORD Ltd. 6 March, 1969 [25 March, 1968], No. 14283/68. Addition to 1,088,906. Heading B2E. [Also in Division G2] Synthetic linear polyester film is coated on at least one surface with a copolymer of a vinyl halogeno ester and at least one other comonomer such that the copolymer has a softening point lower than that of the homo-polymer. The vinyl halogeno ester may be vinyl monochloroacetate and the comonomer may be an alkyl acrylate, alkyl methacrylate, polyalkylene oxide itaconate or maleate, vinyl alkyl ether, vinyl ester, alkene, alkadiene or alkylstyrene, of which many are exemplified. One or more further monomers may be present which provide in the final copolymer carboxyl, hydroxyl, ester, nitrile, amide, N-mono or N,N-di-substituted amide, amino or substituted amino groups. Numerous suitable monomers are listed. A further layer may be applied such as a photographic gelatino silver halide emulsion, or of cellulose acetate or cellulose acetate butyrate, polyvinylacetal or polyvinyl acetate which may be partially hydrolysed. These latter layers may comprise a light sensitive diazonium compound. The further layer may be of an organic filmforming solvent-soluble material containing finely divided particles of an inorganic translucence producing agent, or of a water-swellable organic film-forming material which has been insolubilised and contains a finely divided inorganic filler so as to provide a lithographic printing plate. A cross-linking agent may be present in the top layer. The base film may be orientated, treated with a swelling agent or exposed to corona discharge before coating. The swelling agent may be a halophenol or an α-chloro-substituted aliphatic acid.
