Abstract
1,178,432. Phosphorus and phosphoryl triisocyanate. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 16 Jan., 1967 [15 Jan., 1966], No. 2138/67. Heading C1A. Phosphorus tri-isocyanate is prepared by reacting phosphorus trichloride with an inorganic cyanate at an elevated temperature of 40‹ to 180‹ C. in a chlorohydrocarbon solvent having a flash point above 30‹ C. and a boiling point in the range of 40‹ to 180‹ C., with the addition of an organic nitrile as a catalyst. The solvent may be a perchlorohydrocarbon such as carbon tetrachloride or perchloroethylene. The catalyst is preferably an aliphatic nitrile. The phosphorus tri-isocyanate may be oxidized to phosphoryl tri-isocyanate and this is achieved by removing inorganic chloride, formed during the reaction, from the reaction product and oxidizing the reaction product with sulphur trioxide at - 30‹ to 10‹ C. In an example, phosphorus trichloride and sodium cyanate are reacted in the presence of acetonitrile, in carbon tetrachloride. On completion of tins reaction, sodium chloride is removed from the reaction products and the solution of phosphorus tri-isocyanate is then oxidized with sulphur trioxide to phosphoryl tri-isocyanate.
