Abstract

1,178,385. Acoustic thermometer. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 27 June, 1967 [29 June, 1966; 21 Nov., 1966], Nos. 29316/66 and 52098/66. Heading H4D. A thermometer in which the speed of sound in a probe is determined to indicate the probe temperature comprises an elongated magnetostrictive element 12 connected at one end to the probe 11 and at the other end to a terminal mass 14, and a coil 15 disposed about said other end for transmitting acoustic pulses along the element, the mass being positioned such that any reflections from the mass are in phase with the transmitted pulse and merely increase the transmitted pulse width instead of causing interference. The thermometer shown is essentially a development of that in Specification 1,035,763. Element 12 is a twisted strip wrapped with asbestos string and connected through a graphite rod transmission -line 13 to probe 11 which is of rhenium wire. Rod 13 is supported by graphite screws 21 in a niobium sheath 20 coupled to ceramic case 22 which contains a pyrophyllite support 23 for transmitting coil 15 and a receiving coil 16. Mass 14 may include a magnet for biasing element 12. Element 12 may be a tube instead of a twisted strip.
