Abstract

1,178,291. Machinery safety devices. PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. 13 Jan., 1967 [17 Jan., 1966], No. 1886/67. Heading F2J. [Also in Division E2] In a washing and centrifugal machine or dishwasher having a door giving access to a rotatable part which is adapted to be driven at two different speeds, a locking mechanism for the door comprises an electro-magnet having a core 1, located between two permanent magnets 3, 4, and having a coil 2 which is connected to the terminals 5, 6 of an alternating voltage source through one of two diodes 7, 8 and a switch 9 which may be actuated by a programming device. When the machine performs the centrifugal operation, the polarization of the core 1 is such that it is attracted by magnet 3 and a member 13 engages a hook 14 to lock the door in the closed position. On reversal of the polarity of the core 1, it is attracted by the magnet 4 so that the door is unlocked. This may operate whilst the machine rotates at low speed during a washing cycle. A microswitch may be incorporated so that the rotary part is stopped practically immediately when the door is opened. If, due to a disturbance of the mains the door cannot be unlocked by the electromagnet, the release may be obtained by means of a bar 16, spring 19 and bar 20 secured to core 1.
