Abstract

1,177,973. Sockets for ball-joints. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. 10 Sept., 1968 [13 Sept., 1967], No. 41738/68. Heading E2F. A socket for a ball and socket joint comprises two parts 16 and 17, one part 16 comprising a cup having a cylindrical portion 19 and a substantially conical closed end portion 21 and the other part 17 comprising a tubular ring. Each of the said parts 16, 17 have an external flange 22, 24 and are held in assembled relation by fixing means acting between the flanges. Bearing members 26, 27 are mounted within parts 16 and 17 respectively, the bearing member 27 being retained in position by deforming inwardly, the outer end of the ring 23. A spring washer 28 of the circumferentially undulating or wavy type is placed against the outer end surface of the bearing member 27, a substantially rigid washer 29 of triangular cross-section is placed over the washer 28 and the end of the ring 23 is then peened over or otherwise deformed radially inwardly over the washer 29.
