Abstract

1,177,941. Cutting stone. TETRONICS RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. 19 Dec., 1966 [22 Dec., 1965], No. 54245/65. Heading B5E. [Also in Divisions B3 and H5] A fluid-cooled nozzle for the generation of constricted are plasma comprises a tubular member 1 with a rear end 3 of diameter sufficient to receive an electrode and a forward end providing a sleeve 4 of reduced diameter, the cross-sectional shape of the sleeve being smoothly varied to terminate in an outlet 5 which is elongated in cross-section, e.g. elliptical, as shown, and the tubular member 1 is fitted into an outer casing 2, with outlet end 5 sealed into the casing ends, and cooling fluid, e.g. water, is passed between sleeve 4 and casing 2 via inlet tubes 6 and outlet tubes (not shown). The nozzle outlet may be on ellipse centrally constricted along its minor axis, Figs. 3-5 (not shown). The flattened plasma jet is used for welding metals, cutting metals and refractory materials, and surface cleaning of metals such as by degassing, descaling or derusting. The nozzle is of copper or aluminium. The jet is flattened further by electrostatic means or by an electromagnet positioned about the jet. An argon/nitrogen mixture is used, and a secondary flow of argon may be supplied for better gas shielding.
