Abstract

The pilling resistance of a carpet sample 11 is tested by conditioning the sample 11 in a controlled atmosphere for a predetermined time and maintaining the same conditions during testing, and reciprocating a card cloth wire 19 across the surface of the sample 11 with a rubbing action at a predetermined rate of reciprocation for a predetermined number of cycles, the rubbing pressure being at a predetermined load. The surface changes in the sample 11 are compared with a master sample 11 after completion of the predetermined number of test cycles. The sample 11 of a continuous filament nylon loop pile tufted carpet is mounted on a base 12, preferably made of birch timber, which is clamped to a table 13. The card cloth wire 19 is suspended from a carrier 16 overlying which is a steel plate 18 and which is floatingly suspended, by bolts 17, from a reciprocable arm 14 slidably mounted in stanchions 15. The carrier 16 is linearly reciprocable with the arm 14 but is permitted to move up and down relative thereto. Before testing the sample, it is conditioned at 68-72‹F and from 63-67% relative humidity for 24 hours and, after conditioning, is mounted on the base 12 with the cross machine direction of the carpet parallel to the direction of reciprocation of the card cloth wire 19.
